Rewind: Haiku Highlights from 2018

As 2018 comes to an end, it’s time for one last glance in the rear view mirror.

I published 46 new poems in 2018, up from 36 in 2017, 38 in 2016, and 40 in 2015. In terms of quantity, 2018 was one of my biggest years so far. They appeared in the following journals: Acorn (1), Akitsu Quarterly (4), The Cicada’s Cry (1), The Cicada’s Cry Halloween Digital Edition (1), Failed Haiku (14), Frogpond (2), Haikuniverse (1), Haiku Windows (4), The Heron’s Nest (5), Mariposa (2), A Sense of Place (3), Wales Haiku Journal (7), and Shamrock (1).

One of my biggest milestones in 2018 was that I reached, and surpassed, 500 published poems. That’s a number I’ve been eyeing for a while.

Other notable publications my work appeared in are: old song: The Red Moon Anthology of English-Language Haiku 2017 (Red Moon Press, 2018); Echoes 2 (Red Moon Press, 2018); Four Hundred and Two Snails: Haiku Society of America Members’ Anthology 2018; The Haiku Calendar 2019 (Snapshot Press, 2018); Earthrise Rolling Haiku Collaborative (The Haiku Foundation, 2018); Per Diem: Daily Haiku (The Haiku Foundation, September 2018, theme of sport), and Charlotte Digregorio’s Writer’s Blog (April 2018).

And hey, I even managed to win a few awards. One of my poems won The Heron’s Nest Award in the June issue of The Heron’s Nest, and another in that same issue received an Editor’s Choice. And a couple other poems received runner-up awards in Snapshot Press’s Haiku Calendar Competition.

As far as the writing itself, I published some poems that could potentially end up in my next collection, tentatively titled The White Buffalo. I also published some senryu about a clown motel, a bit outside of my normal subject matter.

Looking forward to 2019, a number of publications are already in the works. Four new poems will appear right off the bat in the January issue of Failed Haiku, and I have had a poem accepted for the March issue of The Heron’s Nest. I have also had a poem voted into a hole in the light: The Red Moon Anthology of English-Language Haiku 2018 (Red Moon Press, 2019). I will have three poems republished in an anthology currently known as Small Town Poetry Anthology, edited by Tom Montag and David Graham for MWPH Books. I’m not sure when it will finally appear, but I have received galley proofs of my poems. I’m very excited to be a part of this one. And I am eagerly waiting for a reply from the editor of an anthology of haiku about trains.

All in all, 2018 was a great year for my writing. My goals are set for 2019, and I’ve already hit the ground running. Many thanks to the editors who published my work in 2018 as well as to everyone to who took the time to check out my blog or Facebook profiles.

    i stumbled across your comments about rejections. I know the journal you submitted to in respect of the questioning of your sensibilities to nature and had a similar rejection. Also like you I take nothing for granted as regards haiku writing whatever my previous successes. I expect stuff to come back and in fact partly welcome it – it’s a challenge for next time and as someone once said ‘a poet needs constant discouragement’. But that was an appalling letter to anyone, let alone experienced writers. I did actually send a (polite) reply saying something like rejections are fine but for anyone to claim superiority in their connection with nature over anyone else whether a haiku writer or otherwise was taking things too far. I did accept in the same reply that perhaps I didn’t send my best work, but then a new journal perhaps has to earn the right to someone’s best work rather than expect it from issue one.
    I haven’t submitted again as yet, but may do so. Anyway, I expect we are not the only two to react in this way but you are certainly not alone. I’m also a great fan of your work by the way!

      Thanks for stopping by my blog and for commenting. I appreciate what you said about rejections, especially in connection to the journal in question. I, too, expect rejection each time I submit work, whatever the publication may be and despite my previous track record. The majority of editors are able to handle rejections in a professional manner. But this rejection was something altogether different. While 2018 was a great year for my writing, this incident is a blemish. You are right, we are not the only ones to receive that letter. And I hope that anyone who did receive it knows that there are other publications out there, great ones even, just waiting for submissions. And there are new publications popping up all the time. I will admit I was irate when I got that rejection letter, but even then I knew better. I know what my connection to nature is, and I know I’m a good haiku poet. And that’s all I need to know to move on. Anyway, thanks again for commenting. I do appreciate your kind words!


  2. Just wanted to congratulate you on your amount of published poems this year and reaching 500! I just started publishing in 2018 and reached 19 (possibly 20 if Mayfly accepts one). I can’t image reaching 500. Looking forward to “white buffalo” and love your other books! Great blog too!

      Congrats on your publications in 2018! 500 is a big number, and it’s taken me since 2002 to reach it!

      Not sure when The White Buffalo will be finished. It’s a long, slow process for me to put a collection together. But I’m glad you have enjoyed my previous books!
